This drawing by Monique Fouquet is part of a series that reflect on photographs and memory. Like many of the artist’s works from this series, the fragmentary image taken from a photograph offers only a hint of the original, with just the figures included on a white ground with no scenery or background to provide context.
Of the work, the artist writes, “This drawing was part of a long series done from photographs documenting everyday occurrences with included a sub-series that depicted people looking at art, people at work, and just people photographed in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts. The idea was to understand what the camera includes, but more importantly what it excludes. So something that might seem ordinary becomes curious when surrounding information is removed. Unfortunately, my slides do not include the title of this piece, but I used to simply write a date in French on the back. So for this one, I would simply write ‘untitled.’” (October 28, 2024)
