Scope & Content
With a focus on the Canadian and British Columbian avant-garde, Vancouver’s post-war art history, and emerging local artists, the Belkin's Permanent Collection is one of the largest public collections of art in the province with some 5,000 works dating from the eighteenth century to the present. The development of the collection predates the gallery. From the 1920s to the 1990s, the University received donations and commissioned portraits. In 1991, the UBC Fine Arts Gallery began to oversee the University Art Collection. Since 1995, when the Fine Arts Gallery was rededicated the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, the collection has developed significantly through a program of selected donations and the purchase of significant works of contemporary art by Canadian and international artists.
