Object Description
Stream, Matsuo Taisha, Kyoto (1981/2014) and Matsuo Taisha, Kyoto (2014; BG6363) are from the photography and ceramic series that Lewis made during his 2014 residency in Japan. The photograph was taken during a trip in 1981, and also corresponds to the nine elements of paradisiacal mythology and printed in 2014 to accompany the ceramic plate. The pottery was made in Bizen and Shigaraki, Japan, which use the same clay, methods and kiln-firing techniques today as they did in the twelfth century. While the ceramic work and the photograph are separate entities, Lewis envisioned the two to be presented together as a singular work, brought together by what the artist terms “poetical thinking … like an everyday occurrence – a pot on a mantelpiece with a picture on the wall above.”
