Object Description
This painting from 2014 is representative of La Melia’s painted works, which tend to privilege soft, painterly surfaces rendered in whimsical colour combinations of purples, yellows and greys. La Melia’s poetic practice seems to show through in her painted works, with loose brushstrokes and evocative titles. writing the black fruits from the purple Proses series, shows what appears to be a scene of a person at a table that is littered with pages of drawings and writings; the figure has purple skin, glasses and is extending an arm that frames the top, left edge of the image.

"I made a series of paintings exploring the archetype of the "poet" or stereotype of the intellectual in the turtleneck. The drawing on the paper on the bottom is referencing the angel fish from the mark twain story Joyce Carol Oates writes about in Grandpa Clemens and Angelfish, 1906, where he starts the aquarium club consisting of wealthy children, mostly girls under the age of 14, to be mentored by him, pen pals, and play pool in his home in the aquarium club room. The angel fish were his favourite fish and each member of the club received a pin in the form"
