- Object Description
- Dundarave is from a series of lyrical abstractions that combine geometrical order and painterly surfaces. The title underlines the allusions to sea, sky and architecture in the areas of Dundarave Beach and adjacent park in West Vancouver. While the subject matter of Gordon Smith’s painting was frequently the natural world, it was often a secondary concern to the act of painting itself – the application of pigment, brushwork, the creation of surface texture and colour harmonies. The horizontal planes and shifting grids of colour in this work serve not only to evoke the seascape, but also to record the artist’s movements in the creation of the work itself. In this sense, the painting becomes an index or evidence of the physical process of Smith’s work.
