Scope & Content
Series consists of postcards acquired in the research phase of exhibition preparation that were not used in the exhibition.
Peter White conducted research for the exhibition in consultation with Presentation House Gallery, where White was guest curator for this project. Extensive research was undertaken over a 2 ½ year period, in which approximately 10,000 postcards were collected. Research on the project involved two components: identifying, locating, and collecting original postcards of the period; the second phase involved complementary work with secondary sources on the history of and development of study of the period within North America. The process of identifying material included travel in British Columbia to Victoria, provincial archives, and to numerous locations on Vancouver Island and in the interior of the province. Postcards were acquired from: private collectors, one of the firms that produced cards, directly from individuals, and at public postcard sales and through dealers.
