Scope & Content
Series consists of source material from Turn Off De Light, a multi-media production conceived, written, and produced by Vancouver artist Victor Doray. Major themes explored in the work include social change, art education, nature, science, and the impact of technology on each of these aspects of human life.
The work runs for 1 hour and 25 minutes, and was first shown on March 9, 1975 at the Western Front. The program was subsequently presented at the Vancouver Art Gallery and at the University of British Columbia. It consists of over twelve hundred slides and 600 feet of film programmed on three screens with the aid of three slide projectors and two film projectors. The sound and program signals come from a cassette, which together with a programmer, are responsible for the full orchestration of the production. To complete the final product, Doray and an assistant (Gerry Nairn) chose from over 5,000 slides, approximately 4,000 feet of original film, and over 100 hours of audio recordings.
To fund the project, Victor Doray received a Senior Arts Grant from the Canada Council. In the application, Doray described the orientation of the project as "the impact that art and nature have on technology and that technology has on them." Doray further stated that through his work he attempts to reveal the diverse forces which affect our lives, and that these forces are often hidden from us because of their quantity, complexity, ambiguity, and speed of change. To reveal these concepts, Doray documented images and sounds from inter-media artists, the technology industry and contemporary life that he then rearranged and juxtaposed against one and other to allow audiences to select their own ingredients for insight. Series consists of source material and the final masters of Doray's multi-media production.
Series is divided into two subseries:
- Textual records subseries (8.1-1)
