Biography

Innukjuakju Pudlat was an Inuk artist who worked primarily in drawing and printmaking to depict histories, contemporary realities and cultural knowledge from the worldview of the Inuit living in Baffin Island. She produced numerous textile works alongside a group of Inuit artists and printmakers as part of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative (WBEC) in Kinngait, NU. The WBEC was established in 1959 by James Houston and Kananginak Pootoogook, who collaborated with local artists to open a printmaking studio and crafts centre with the aim of producing work explicitly for sale to outside markets. The WBEC continues to be financially self-sustaining with revenue returning to community members who are registered as shareholders, with skill development and education central to its mandate.
