Biography
Vancouver based artist Nhan Duc Nguyen (b. 1967, Vietnam) focuses on process-based, community-engaged projects that take up themes of community, national history and cultural identity through the lens of Vietnamese-Canadians. One area of Nguyen’s practice composes the story of the Vietnamese in Vancouver through the rise of its cuisine, which sees him compiling interviews with Vietnamese restaurateurs and restaurant employees in Vancouver, discussing topics that range from favourite foods and their careers in the food and service industry to their experiences as boat people. Nguyen’s work was first exhibited in Yellow Peril: Reconsidered (1991, Artspeak), and has since been shown across Canada, the US, Germany and Australia, including Arts Project Australia, Melbourne (2014), Surrey Art Gallery and Or Gallery, Vancouver (2008). Nguyen has collaborated with numerous Vancouver artists, including Paul Wong, Brice Canyon, Henry Tsang and Sharyn Young.
