Item is a book inspired by the exhibition Thrown at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, University of British Columbia, between January 30 and May 30, 2004. The exhibition featured 600 ceramic works by John Reeve, Glenn Lewis, Michael Henry, and Ian Steele—the four Canadian apprentices of English potter Bernard Leach—and their like-minded contemporaries Tam Irving, Charmian Johnson, and Wayne Ngan The volume includes contributions by Glenn Allison, Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, Michael Henry, Tam Irving, Charmian Johnson, Glenn Lewis, Lee Plested, Herbert Read, John Reeve, Naomi Sawada, Doris Shadbolt, Ian Steele, Nora Vaillant, Scott Watson, and Soetsu Yanagi.
