- Object Description
- Nancy Shaw’s Untitled (1525 Regents) was included in the artist’s 1992 publication Scoptocratic. The title comes from the Greek word skropos, meaning a watcher or spay and a mark to shoot at, combined with the verb krateo, meaning to be strong and to rule. The title implies not just “rule by surveillance,” but also references the tyranny of the gaze and the condition of being observed – “speculated” – and being constructed by that gaze.
