- Object Description
- Greg Curnoe’s 1965 collage, Terrell – 15 Rounds, consists of three ovoid layers made up of tickets, transfers, packaging and other random pieces of commercially-produced paper. The word “TIT” appears stamped in red on the middle yellow layer that rests on a smaller white layer. The entire collage is floating on a background of neon pink paper, with a yellow frame painted in the same colour as the middle layer that is intrinsic to the work.
This collage is fairly typical of Curnoe’s collaged work from the early 1960s through 1965, when he used found objects – often tickets and transfers, as in Terrell – to create shaped collages on blank grounds. The artist’s choice of materials was a nod to his immediate surroundings coupled with his own travels – ticket stubs and gum wrappers could have been collected from the streets of his home town, documenting in some way the small businesses of London, Ontario, or brought with him from further away. This work is a precursor to his shaped collage cutouts, which he produced between 1965 and 1968, most often representing facial features including eyes, lips, moustaches.
The words "BEATEN // CHUVALO" are stamped onto the collage. The title of the work refereces the fight between boxers, Ernie Terrell and George Chuvalo on November 1, 1965 at Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto. Terrell won after 15 rounds.
