Over the past five decades, Lewis has photographed and created gardens as part of his personal investigation into paradisial symbolism. Beginning in the 1970s, Lewis and artist Taki Bluesinger embarked on an international tour to document gardens. This selection of nine prints encapsulates the nine categories of garden Lewis distilled for the 1978 publication, An Earthly Paradise Journey: Bewilderness: The Origins of Paradise; Gateway: The Threshold of Paradise; Utopiary: Man and Beasts in Paradise; Paths: The Trodden Way through Paradise; Field or Cloister: A Maze or Clearing in Paradise; Waterways: The Waters in Paradise; Metaphorest: The Sacred Trees in Paradise; Mount: The Sacred Mountain in Paradise; and Grotto: The Cave in Paradise.
