Object Description
This painting from 2013 is representative of La Melia’s painted work, which tend to privilege soft, painterly surfaces rendered in whimsical colour combinations of purples, yellows and greys. La Melia’s poetic practice seems to show through in her painted works, with loose brushstrokes and evocative titles. Class room (private eyes), which is in excellent condition, is set in a grey, ethereal space punctuated with sets of eyes of different colours on the turbulent upper half of the canvas.

"I painted it in response to my class as a reflection of reflecting and being reflected on (my perception of the room from the pov of the ignorant schoolmaster). . .  in a way its not so verbal a painting, but just dealing with this feeling of feeling watched, (washed away of water colour) performance anxiety."
