- Object Description
- Don't Look Away is an extended series of drawings begun when Koenker bought a copy of the French newspaper Le Monde in Paris while on a residency at La Cité internationale des arts. As a way of navigating a language barrier and contending with global crises, she developed an initial project to record all the pictures in Le Monde on a given day. Using carbon paper as an interface between newspaper and drawing paper, Koenker's images emerge after the removal of layers and she effectively draws blind. In this space, she composes images, inventing marks using fingers, fingernails and erasures, selecting pencils for their line qualities, varying the pressure of the line, traces lines, tones and textures to reveal an interwoven web of images.
The process of drawing is slow in contrast to the media cycle. Koenker has written that, "Perhaps slowing down is one of the last radical actions possible, in the art world and in the world generally." Working from an archive, the newspaper (which is itself an increasingly rare media), Koenker has created an alternative archive of news that speaks to the continued urgencies of feminism, democracy, civil rights, the climate crisis and the crisis of truth.
