Object Description

Georges Bataille’s theory of general economy begins with the assertion that the sun provides a surplus of energy to the earth. Alexandra Dikeakos’s interpretation of the myth of Icarus underscores the sun’s endless supply of energy, representing the sun as a celestial being impassively observing the human tragedy unfolding before it. Separated from the realm of the human by undulating currents of solar energy, The Fall of Icarus serves as a parable that warns of the dangers of failing to recognize and respect human and ecological limits.
