Object Description
Attila Richard Lukacs, Love in Union, Amorous Meeting (1991) is a historically important piece. The work was selected for Documenta IX by Jan Hoet in 1992, but when it arrived in Kassel it was never hung because it is against the law to publicly display a swastika in Germany. The piece fits within Lukacs work of the time where he is sexually fetishizing skinheads who at the time divided themselves between socialist skinheads and the neo-Nazi skinheads. Here he shows them in some sort of accord where one is fingering the rising swastika and the other is saluting it. It is an ambiguous piece, which I find somewhat historically aware. In between the two people and the rising neo-right symbol is a field of poppies like the one in the Wizard of Oz, which can have a narcotic effect and put one to sleep.
