- Object Description
- Dana Claxton’s large photograph Paint Up #1 depicts the painted face of a Coast Salish ceremonial dancer in extreme close-up. If the work asks us on one level to consider the history of portraiture – both painted and photographic – this consideration is shaped by the fact that the painted surface, in this instance, is a human face, and that the paint itself has specific cultural, social and ceremonial functions. According to the artist, the work “is about a spiritual relationship to the paint,” which she describes as being both “ceremonial” and “from the natural world.”
