Object Description

Item is number nineteen of the magazine Art-Rite, co-published by Art-Rite and LAICA Journal (The Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art). The magazine was edited, written, and put together by artists Edit DeAk and Walter Robinson, and ran twenty one issues between 1973 and 1978. The magazine contained reviews of artists' work, poetry, and articles discussing modern art and art critics. Item includes the following: a series of short descriptions of various projects related to the art world by deAk and Robinson, reviews of publications by Robinson, a short piece by Kickboy Face entitled 'Teen Genius', a piece of writing entitled 'Swim Parables' by Robert Morgan, X & Y Offer, an article entitled 'Capitalism of Lotusland' by Jack Smith, a transcript of fragments of conversations that John McCracken had with Tony DeLap, Kelly Hames, Jolynn Suzar, James Hayward, David Trowbridge, Jay McCafferty, Meghan Williams, and Choyoshi Kawai, a transcript of the text of Dick Miller's 'Mneumonic Theatre', an article entitled 'Reifying the Heifetz-Trotsky Axis' by Ronald Al Robboy, an article entitled 'Two Painters in L.A.' by Peter Plagens, an essay by Randall Warniers entitled 'D.W. Griffith Reconsidered', an article by Robinson featuring reviews of the work of several artists entitled 'Storytelling, Infantilism and Zoophily', an articles about Robert Biggs by Susan Martin, an article on the work of film maker and painter Manny Farber by Richard Armstrong, an article on the work of artist Judy Pfaff by Richard Armstrong, an article entitled 'Autobiography: The Self in Art' by Laurie Anderson, an excerpt of a radio series entitled 'A Change of Tears', an essay entitled 'Opting Out and Buying In' by Howard Singerman about 'alternative spaces' that are artist-run, an essay by Peter Frank entitled 'Patterns in the Support Structure for California Art' that traces the development of art in California, and several photos by Jonathan Dent.
