Biography
Skeena Reece (Tsimshian/Gitksan/Cree, b. 1974) is a multidisciplinary artist based on the West Coast of British Columbia. Her practice includes performance art, spoken word, writing, singing, video, visual art and the traditional practice of sacred clowning. Exploring themes of selfhood and Indigenous representation, Reece joins humour and playfulness with solemnity and tenderness. The embodiment and sociality of her practice requires viewers to reflect beyond the white cube and consider their own relations to the territories they occupy. Her work confronts settler colonialism and its consequences on Indigenous people, especially women, often using the trickster figures of Coyote and Raven as a foundation.
