Biography

Douglas Coupland studied art in Vancouver at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, as well as in Milan, and Tokyo. He received an honourary degree at the University of British Columbia in 2010. Coupland frequently addresses subjects of popular culture, and generational and technological change in both his literary and artistic productions. He is well known for his works of fiction such as Generation A (2009), JPod (2006), Microserfs (1995), Life After God (1993), and Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture (1991).

Coupland’s art has been exhibited internationally, and he has been the subject of a number of studies, including Art and Design, by Alex Coles (MIT Press and Whitechapel Gallery, 2007). The book analyzes the work of many artists such as Dan Graham and Andy Warhol, who explore the dissolution of "the traditional boundaries between art and architectural, graphic, and product design ... in critically significant ways.
