Scope & Content
File contains materials related to Laiwan's work, CAVE / CAVEAT. CAVE / CAVEAT was originally conceived of during Laiwan's research at the UBC Fine Arts Library stacks, exploring medieval woodcuts and imagery relating to death. The images were accompanied by experimental text aimed at expanding mythologies through the metaphor of a cave.
The first 1985 installation of the work at Or Gallery, curated by Arni Haraldsson, included small bamboo cricket cages filled with decaying organic matter. The wall installations were composed of visual and textual excerpts that elaborated on the publication, also created as part of the work. A reprint of the publication was made in 2012 by Presentation House Gallery.
The file contains various materials relating to the creation and recreation of the work, during its multiple iterations and showings.
