Scope & Content

Series is composed of textual records and a few photographic slides relating to writings and publications by Carole Itter. Series includes drafts of writings, copies of publications by or contributed to by Itter, unpublished pieces of writing, reviews, and other records relating to Itter’s writing. Records in this series are grouped together based on which writing projects they relate to, including: Personal Baggage / The Log’s Log (Vancouver: Intermedia Press, 1973), Whistle Daughter Whistle (Vancouver: Caitlin Press, 1982), Location: Shack, Opening Doors: Vancouver’s East End (Victoria: Aural History Program, Ministry of Provincial Secretary and Government Services, Provincial Archives, 1979), and other published and unpublished works. Itter’s artist book entitled The Log’s Log is the documentation of Itter’s 1972 performance art piece Personal Baggage, during which Itter transported a yellow cedar log from Robert’s Creek, British Columbia to Lockeport, Nova Scotia via the Canadian National Railway. Whistle Daughter Whistle is a collection of short stories, Location: Shack is Itter’s 1986 artist’s book. Opening Doors: Vancouver’s East End is a collection of oral histories from Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood by compiled by Carole Itter and Daphne Marlatt. There are also records relating to the republication of the work in 2011 as Opening Doors in Vancouver’s East End: Strathcona (Madeira Park: Harbour Publishing, 2011).

One of the groupings is composed of publications by or contributed to by Itter, including a 2005 article by Itter that was published in The Globe and Mail entitled “Scarred for Life? You Bet” and responses to it, Itter’s 1974 publications Word Work (Vancouver: Intermedia Press, 1974) and Birthday (Prince George: Creative Community Press, 1974), and copies of Into the Night Life: Canadian Writers and Artists at Work (Toronto: Nightwood Editions, 1986), Making Room: Forty Years of Room Magazine (Vancouver: Caitlin Press, 2017), IS Magazine No. 14 (1973), The Capilano Review issue 2.1 (1989), and Cradle and All: Women Writers on Pregnancy and Birth (Boston: Faber and Faber, 1989).
