Scope & Content

Subseries consists of personal and professional correspondence sent to Eric Metcalfe by various individuals and organizations on a range of topics related to Metcalfe's art projects and personal life. Several of the letters include enclosures, such as art event flyers and materials relevant to Metcalfe's projects and personas.

Subseries also includes correspondence from the following notable individuals:

  • Michael Andre, editor of the arts quarterly Unmuzzled Ox, a prominent issue of which was The Poets' Encyclopedia
  • Hank Bull, who has been involved with the Western Front Society since 1973 and is the founder and executive director of Centre A (Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art)
  • Victor Coleman (Vic d'Or), avant-garde writer, editor, film studies and creative writing professor, and director of A Space from 1975-1979
  • Bill Gaglione, who was active in the international mail art network of the 70s
  • Gilbert and George, the Turner-award winning London-based performance artists famous for their concept of "living sculptures" and their sectioned, colourful artworks
  • Ray Johnson, the American conceptual, performance, collage, and mail artist whose incorporation of language in visual art has had a lasting effect on contemporary art practices
This subseries differs from subseries 4.2-1 in the format of the correspondence. While this subseries is primarily composed of traditional letters in envelopes, subseries 4.2-1 consists of mail art postcards; however, some of the letters in this subseries are artistic and creative in nature and therefore overlap with the content of subseries 4.2-1.
