Scope & Content
Subseries consists of one small notebook containing drawn images of fictional characters and real-life characters, such as Chet Baker, Barney Kessel, and Fidel Castro; and one accompanying letter written by Eric Metcalfe explaining to Scott Watson, current director of the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, how he came to re-possess the notebook in 2000.
Metcalfe began drawing cartoons as a student at St. Michael’s School in Victoria, and it was in these notebooks (of which only this one—the smallest—survives) that the seeds were laid for the development of Dr. Brute and Metcalfe’s latter work on storyboarding for film and video production.
