Scope & Content

File consists of an exhibition catalogue, exhibition pamphlets, press release, catalogue lists, a review, and correspondence. The exhibition made an attempt to cover the entire development of artistic production in BC beginning with the first public showing of a selection of artifacts of a prehistoric nature. Includes works by Indigenous artists of the BC coast as well as works by itinerant white artists in the mid to later 19th century, who recorded their early impressions of British Columbia. More than eighty artists were represented in this exhibition, including: Emily Carr, Lawren Harris, Frederick Varley, J.W.G. MacDonald, Charles Scott, Jack Shadbolt, Gordon Smith, John Koerner, Bruno and Molly Bobak, Donald Jarvis, Lionel Thomas, J.A.S. Macdonald, and many others. The exhibition was shown at the UBC Fine Arts Gallery July 5 to August 20, 1965.
