Scope & Content
Series consists of posters, pamphlets, newspapers articles, correspondence, unpublished articles, artists statements, reviews, curriculum vitae, magazines, newsletters, adjudication comments, speeches, and articles.
The records mostly pertain to Alvin Balkind’s tenure as curator for University Art Centre from 1962 to 1973 and include records on organizing exhibitions, petitioning for funds, and other related administrative matters. Some files also relate to Balkind’s work as an art critic—he was often asked to write reviews, articles, or adjudicate art competitions. One of the most prevalent types of records found in his papers is correspondence. Balkind wrote to many people, from gallery curators to artists and to such names as Samuel Beckett and Marshall McLuhan.
